History of Our Church
With relative certainty, we can report that a half century before the Town of Vincent was chartered by the Alabama Legislature in 1897, a small group of Baptists were meeting for worship as a congregation known today as the First Baptist Church of Vincent. One source indicates that this church was organized in 1845 near the Elliottsville Settlement in Shelby County, Alabama. This fellowship of Christians has through the years been known as Spring Creek Baptist Church, Vincent Baptist Church, and now First Baptist Church of Vincent.
However, a church is more than bricks and mortar, wood and nails. A church is people, and the personality of a church is determined by the people in membership. Many members, both former and present, have commented concerning the love, concern, and worshipful atmosphere of the church. “Precious memories, how they linger, how they ever flood my soul” – words from a beautiful old hymn that express, however inadequately, feelings and thoughts of many who have worshipped in this church over the years, numbering now about 160. Many faithful members and pastors have passed through these church doors, making this church the lighthouse it is in the community. May those who are now beginning their journey here and those who are yet to come have such precious memories to warm them in the years to follow.
